Sitting on the porch feeling these sweeping breezes of the past week have brought rich memories of my childhood on Sullivan’s Island with them. There, a maternal great-aunt of legendary proportions admonished us to “always pray to the saints– because Jesus loves them, you understand?”
Please, allow me to take a moment to explain the often misunderstood Catholic teaching of “praying to saints”. We pray “to” them, however it is not so they may answer our prayers directly, rather it is like asking a fellow family member or friend for their prayers. After all, it is these role models of the Catholic faith that are canonized so we might have a few reformed-sinners to look up to along our journey of faith.
With the tropics being so active this season, it has me thinking of a certain patron that was so near + dear to my great-aunt-Ann, as well as the resident + visiting priests we knew growing up. Our Lady of Prompt Succor is the patron to a few places/causes, however we always knew her –thanks to Annie– as “the one to pray to for protection from hurricanes”.
